What is the best time of year to plant?
As you could imagine fall is the best time to plant.  With that being said, boxwood has a very fibrous root structure that makes planting boxwood a good candidate in about all seasons.

What are some of the best small varieties?
There are a number of good smaller growing varieties.  Some of my favorites are English, Jensen, Green Mound, Justin Brouwer, and Vardar Valley.
 
What variety works best in colder climates?
The varieties that we are familiar with are Green Mound, Green Mountain, Green Velvet, and Chicagoland boxwood.  These all are rate for zone 4.
 
What are the most upright/narrow growing boxwood?
The most common upright varieties are Graham Blandy, Dee Runk, and Fastigiata.
 
What are the names of variegated boxwood?
There are two varieties that we are familiar with that are great for zones 6-8.  They are ELEGANS (Buxus Sempervirens ‘ELEGANS’) and Elegantissima (Buxus Sempervirens Elegantissima). ELEGANS are larger growing than Elegantissima.
